Hypnotherapy

What Is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is one of the most ancient and respected medical practices known to man.  It has lasted through the centuries because it is a natural state of consciousness that we all experience to various degrees on a daily basis, often without realizing it.  If you meditate, if you zone out on the golf course, if you escape into music, a good book, movie or TV, missing your off-ramp while driving on the freeway, and the drowsy relaxation experienced immediately before going to sleep and upon awakening are examples of hypnotic states.  During these periods our subconscious mind is very receptive to suggestions coming from ourselves or others, and that trance state can be used to create suggestions for your subconscious mind to help you make a wide range of improvements in your life.

Hypnotherapy is like a bridge that will help you build a connection between who you are today to who and what you desire to be and have in the future.  By envisioning your own bright future you can be empowered to light your own way, so that it will resonate harmoniously within your body because you will be living your own dream and not someone else’s life.  This vision will guide and literally propel you forward in the direction you wish to go so that you can experience the success, fun and love that you truly deserve.

Hypnosis has been approved as a method since 1958 by the American Medical Association, and now it's being actively investigated by the National Institutes of Health, and practiced at the Mayo Clinic and at medical schools from Stanford to Harvard, as an effective adjunct to conventional medicine.

How Does Hypnotherapy Work?

Changes are usually made at the behavioral level and reinforced through consciously applied "positive thinking".  Hypnotherapy provides direct access to your mind's most powerful part, the subconscious.  Limiting beliefs and experiences can be changed, and new resources can be added, allowing your mind and body to support and guide your new behavior from the deepest levels.  You can create powerful, lasting changes.

What Does It Feel Like To Be Hypnotized?

You are not asleep or unconscious during the hypnosis session.  In fact, you are mentally alert, physically relaxed, and extremely aware of all that is happening around you, especially what the hypnotherapist is saying, and you are in complete control during the session.  You can remember everything that happens during the session and will leave refreshed, alert, relaxed and feeling great!

Will I Do Anything That I Do Not Want To Do?

Absolutely nobody can be placed in a hypnotic trance against their will.  Even a highly skilled hypnotherapist needs your cooperation in order to induce a trance.  The only person capable of controlling your subconscious mind is you.

You cannot and will not ever be compelled to do or say anything under hypnosis that is in conflict with your personal, moral, or ethical standards, and/or stated desires.  Unless you want to reveal information during hypnosis, the information in your subconscious mind will remain hidden.

California Senate Bill 577

California Senate Bill 577, passed at the beginning of 2003, helps guarantee the publics access to complementary healing arts such as massage, aromatherapy, and hypnotherapy for problems that fall outside the normal scope of licensed medical practice.  Millions of Californians now regularly avail themselves of these services, which unlike licensed healing arts, convectional medicine, psychotherapy, family therapy; etc., do not require medical training or credentials.

California Senate Bill 577 builds on the California Business and Professions Code # 2908 which governs the practice of Hypnotherapists, and recognized hypnotherapy as a valid method for "vocational and avocational self-improvement”.

Questions To Ask A Hypnotherapist:

Whilst California does guarantee your access to hypnosis services, it does not regulate their quality in any way.  Since hypnotherapy is self-regulating business, the quality of training and services available to the public varies.  Some of the professional hypnotherapists practicing today took training that might be as brief as a weekend or a single week and as long as one year.

1.         Ask to see the hypnotherapist’s disclosure statement.  Hypnotherapists are required by law to have you read and sign a full statement of their legal status, theory, training, and experience.

2.         Ask where the hypnotherapist learnt hypnotherapy, how long did they study, and how long have they practiced it professionally?  The best training involves hundreds of hours of classroom time, specialized seminars, and months of supervised internship.

3.                  Ask the hypnotherapist if they give a free consultation to discuss the issues you wish to work on.  This will enable you to ask questions, discuss the fees, and feel comfortable with the hypnotherapist and their office.  You can discuss how many sessions may be required, but since everyone is different it may not be possible to give an exact number of sessions.  Many issues can be handled quickly such as smoking cession, fear of flying, fear of public speaking, improving study skills, test anxiety, improving sports performance, childbirth preparation, overcoming procrastination, time management and building self confidence and self esteem.  Some issues take a longer period of time and these may include weight management, health issues and changing your life script.
